International Journal Review (Second Journal) : 2

Assalamualaikum wr wb..
Hello everyone :D Still with me in the second journal of "Podcast Effect on EFL Learners Listening Comprehension" So,after the literature review, now we will discuss about the research method. Let's check this out !

B. Research Method
Quan-qual is the method that used in this research to identify the impact of podcasts. This mixed method design serves to combine the quantitative and qualitative approaches and create reinforcement between quantitative and qualitative data. Through this approach, the researchers explained that we can more understand a phenomenon completely. The quantitative data were collecting first and more heavily weight than the qualitative data Gay, Mills & Airasian (2012). The quantitative approach did by using the quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. While the qualitative approach using a questionnaire open-ended questions. Participants in this study were students IX grade of SMA Negeri 1 Luwu on 2017/2018. The first science class have a role as an experimental group while in the third science class as a control group that considering a combination of cluster random sampling and purposive sampling technique.
There are two types of instruments used to collect data, namely tests of listening comprehension and open-ended questions. The listening comprehension test is directly selected from the 2017 English National Examination published by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP). This test consists of fifteen multiple choice questions that must be completed in thirty minutes. The contents of the test are about dialogue, incomplete dialogue, and a monologue which is divided into four parts. During the test, students listen to dialogue, incomplete dialogue, and several monologues and questions spoken in English. Each question will be spoken twice and after they listen, they must choose five possible answers. Then, students are asked to decide which will be the best answer. Open-ended questions consist of six questions about podcasts in teaching listening.
Pre-tests is to determine the achievement of previous listening comprehension from the experimental group and the control group. Furthermore, the experimental group is taught to apply the podcast material that categorized into A2, B1, and B2.
This particular level of listening proficiency purely based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level descriptors for overall listening comprehension. Students in A2, B1, and B2 are expected to be able to identify, understand the general messages, get the main points or specific information about daily activities, narratives spoken in the form of dialogue and monologues (Council of Europe, 2001). While the control group is taught using a textbook.
Then, a post-test is to identify the development of listening comprehension after the group received a different report. Finally, open-ended questions are given only to the students in the experimental group to explore their interest in podcasts.
There are several stages to analyzing quantitative data :
1. A data was assessed using the formula proposed by Asrul, Ananda & Rosnita, (2014).
2. Classified it into scales to measure listening achievement as mentioned by Carrol & West (1989)
3. SPSS (statistics) 23 version, used to determine the average score, standard deviation, frequency, percentage of student scores and hypotheses.

In my opinion, the contents of this journal are very good and complete because they put a several theories and opinions from experts. This journal  gives a lot of new knowledge to readers, especially me. Then, the techniques and methods used are different from other researchers and i like it. However, this journal has a lack. The researcher are less able to convey the content briefly and easy to understand. There are several repetitions of words or sentences that make the reader confused. To read this journal, it takes 2 or 3 repetitions so that we can understand clearly. But, this journal is very good and recommend to read especially for the teacher who wants a new methods or technique in teaching listening.

Thank you for reading :D

The Comparison between First Journal and Second Journal

Assalamualaikum wr wb..

In this blog,we will discuss about the differences and the similarity between the journal of "Improving Students Ability by using Chain Whispering Technique" and the journal of "Podcast Effect on EFL Learners Listening Comprehension". That two journals have many differences and similarities, such as methods and the purpose itself . For that, let's see the explanation below..

1. The Differences
The first journal discusses about the chain whispering technique that can improve the students listening ability. There were two kind of instrument applied on that research, listening test and questionnaire. The student is expected to give their response toward the statements in the questionnaire. In collecting data, the writer used the following procedures as pre test, treatment and post test. While the second journal discusses about the effects of podcast techniques in improving student listening comprehension. There are two types of instruments used to collect data, tests of listening comprehension and open-ended questions. But,on this journal only use pre-test and post-test to determine and identify the development of students. Then, the participants in the first journal was a junior high school students while the second journal was a senior high school students. For the contents, the first journal used a texts which is whispered by the teachers or the other students.
Then, the second journal used a dialogue, incomplete dialogue, and a monologue.
The way of the authour when deliver the method or expalanation was also different. From the first journal, the author explained the content very briefly, clearly and easy to understand. However in the second journal, the author could not explain clearly and concisely. There was many repetitions of words and sentences. So the readers a little bit confused.
2. The Similarities
The purpose of these two techniques is same, that is to improve and develop the aspects of listening ability and comprehension to the students. Chain whisper technique is an innovative and creative method for students so they will interested in developing listening skills. Chain whisper technique is very useful for teachers in improving listening skill for the childern. Also, podcasts have succeeded in increasing students' abilities in the listening aspect. In podcasts, students can listen to native speakers directly. This activities can train students ability to understand what native speakers has been said. If both of these techniques are applied in listening teaching and learning, i'm sure that the students will be interested and easy to understand about the materials. This is certainly can improve the aspect of listening for students in learning English.

Both of them have the same purpose. If the teacher can use that two methods,i’m sure that the students listening ability will increase.

International Journal Review (Second Journal) : 1

Assalamualaikum wr wb..

Hello everyone hihi welcome back with me, mutiara. In this occasion,i would like to share you about the new international journal. Last week,we discuss about chain whispering technique. But for now,we will discuss the new journal. The title is "PODCAST EFFECTS ON EFL LEARNERS LISTENING COMPREHENSION" by Abd Rahman,Haryanto Atmowardoyo, and Kisman Salija.
So,let's see the literature review below !

A. Literature Review
Podcasts broadcast the audio files and programs on the internet that can be heard by downloading them on a computer. As mentioned by Man Sze (2006) that podcasts is a learning programs in the form of audio and video on the web and usually update episodes regularly. Podcast is a term from "iPod" and "broadcast" which means broadcasting via the internet to be played on iPods. Putman & Kingsley, 2009 explained that podcasts comes from traditional audio (mp3), and transformed into digital media. Podcasts are familiar in teaching and language learning, because it helps the students to get closer into the target language.
The research on the relationship between podcasts and ELT growing rapidly. Hasan & Tan (2013) conducted a study of "Podcast Applications in Language Learning" and they found that podcasts strongly support the students for English language learning skills. Gholami & Mohammadi (2015) concluded that learners who have more contact with mobile learning through podcasting are more motivated to learn languages because they are interested in the offline and online services offered.
Patel (2015) The use of podcasts in English learning classes is more useful than using speech and chalk methods. On the other hand, Faramarzi & Bagheri (2015) they suggested that podcasts can be related to the learning syllabus by considering the content in it. In addition, podcasts increase the students' vocabulary, improve their speaking also listening skills and develop their language understanding.
Hogan, Alonzo & Adlof (2017) suggested that listening comprehension is the ability to understand what people heard in the purpose of understanding the language spoken. Listening is a complex, active and conscious action which is listeners are involved in analyzing, interpreting and constructing meanings that enable them to understand and provide responses to verbal input through their ability to distinguish sounds, prior knowledge, structures, intonations, and other linguistic or non-linguistic instructions.
An interest is a feeling which determines activities, liking or disliking object that are valued for someone and certain stimulus that leads someone’s behaviour to particular aims. An interest is a subjective attitude motivating a person to perform a certain task Berlyne (1949). By looking at the definition above, we can concluded that interest is a feeling about what you want to know or learn about something where someone has a positive attitude towards something that they really likes and enjoys. In this study, an interest refers to students' feelings and attitudes toward podcasts in listening comprehension. The main objectives of this study were :
(1) To investigate whether or not podcast effects on EFL learners listening comprehension,
(2) To identify the students’ interest towards podcast in teaching listening comprehension.

So in the literature review, the author suggested that podcasts are one of the alternative media in learning and teaching English. Based on some statements explained by several other reseachers, we can find out that podcasts have succeeded in increasing students' abilities in the listening aspect. In podcasts, students can listen to native speakers directly. This activities can train their ability to understand what native speakers has been said. In addition, they can also learn the correct pronunciation and get a lot of new vocabulary.

Very interesting, isn't it? So,that's all for me. Thank you for reading.

International Journal Review (2)

Assalamualaikum wr wb..

Hello friends :D How are you today? I hope you are having a good time. Well,in this blog i still discuss about the journal of "Improving Students Listening Ability By Using Chain Whispering Words or Sentence Technique". Last week, i reviewed about the introduction. And now i'll review about the literature review.

Literature Review
The ideas in this journal were supported by a several previous researchers such as Faridah, Kartono, and Siti Halidjah (2012) who stated that the chain whispering technique had been successfully because there was an increasement in every meeting. Apriani Sufiarti, A.A.I.N. Marhaeni, I.M. Sutama (2013) also explained that students' interest in learning English was improved when using a chain whispering techniques. Especially in the aspect of listening. In addition, Kurnia Zulianti PBI FKIP Unisma (2013) also stated that chain whispering techniques gave a good results to improve students' speaking skills. It means that teaching English speaking skill by using whisper game was successful. This technique could be used by the teacher for the speaking class to develop and improve the students’ speaking achievement with any other activity and style based on the students’ interest. By using whisper game, teaching will be fun. Referring to some previous research findings, the researcher concluded that the students’ listening ability can be improved after giving some interesting techniques or more exercises or using unusual media. It means that English teachers should have a variety of techniques in order to avoid the bored students.

I think this technique is very interesting. The reseachers gave the detail explanation about how is a chain whispering. The researchers also put a several statement from the other researchers. This is a great technique to practice the students listening skills. I agree that this technique will be liked by students, because the students loves to work in a group. If the students understand about something, they will remember it for a long time. I hope this technique will gave that effect for students.

That's all from me,i hope this information can be useful for us. Thank you for reading :)

The researchers told about that writing, reading, listening and speaking skills are very necessary in learning English. To developing the children's competency, listening skill is the most important thing or it's called a receptive skills. As a humans, we are not only want to hear, but also want to know the purpose of the problem. For that,we must be active and have a good listening skills.      Listening is the main basis for developing the students' communication in oral language. For teachers, listening skills are the most important thing also the most complicated in learning English. To interact daily, english students must improve their listening. They must have skill to change the listening language into a speech language. For that, the teacher are required to have a creative technique when they are teach the material to the student. Silberman stated that what he heard, he forgot; what he heard and saw, he remembered a little; what he heard, saw, and asked or discussed about others, he began to understand; what he heard, saw, discussed, and whether he gained knowledge and skills; what he taught others, he mastered.
